Art with Ella

Krista says:

While on the coast, Ella and I visited the Vancouver Art Gallery, where the main exhibit showcased the works of the late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos (1964–2012). Her contemporary paintings intricately weave personal and political narratives onto the canvas. “Through patterns, scale, and repetition, Thomasos evokes the magnitude of historical events like the transatlantic slave trade without exploiting the images of those most impacted,” (from the art gallery write-up). To deepen Ella’s connection to the art, we played a game: ‘How does this painting move you?’ As we engaged with the artwork, I captured Ella’s movement through photography and it felt like Denyse, Ella, and I were collaboratively creating art together.
