Five Senses Bali: Part 2

It’s the post you’ve been waiting for, part 2 of our Five Senses Bali series!

Smell

The humidity imparts a damp and watery scent to the surroundings, especially before a monsoon shower. Cigarette smoke and sweet vaping aromas linger in the air. Incense is prevalent, filling the air with its fragrant smoke, alongside the mixed scents of flowers and occasional garbage. There are moments when burning plastic wafts through the air, from someone igniting their rubbish and also the scent of petrol.

Touch

Bali offers an array of sensory experiences, particularly through numerous massages, the warm embrace of the Indian Ocean and the penetrating heat of the sun create a unique tactile sensation. Clothes become sticky with sweat, and hair feels uncomfortably hot against the back of the neck. Saltwater pools provide a refreshing contrast, and swimming in the rain adds a touch of adventure. Warm water surrounds you, while mosquito bites serve as a reminder of the tropical environment. Be cautious of slippery rocks by the ocean, feel the softness of sand between your toes, and encounter seaweed as you swim in the ocean. Unfortunately, the reality of garbage brought to Bali by ocean currents, encountered both while swimming and especially while paddling out to surf is a tactile challenge as it sticks to your arms.

Taste

The humidity in the air, the very salty ocean water, amazing food, delicious smoothies, bitter drinks, and spiciness in so many bites! Sweet desserts abound, but water can taste peculiar when one is dealing with Bali belly.

What a delicious note to end on. We never got tired of the tastes of Bali 😋.
